We’re guessing that the Cosi Bella vineyard was planted about 12-15 years ago. Sometime during its youth the property fell victim to a foreclosure so the original clone of Sangiovese has been lost to time. When the Kampling family came upon the vineyard they knew what had to be done and spent the last 5 years bringing the vineyard quality up to its name ( ”so beautiful” ).
Each year before harvest, the vineyard is carefully tended to reduce crop load and manage just the right amount of leaf cover to insure perfect, even ripening. This is also one of the earliest to ripen, typically right around the last week of August.
For the 2014 vintage, we picked the Cosi Bella fairly early (around August 25th) and about a brix point riper that the prior year. This subtle change in pick point yielded quite a different wine. Of course the expected - slightly higher alcohol; but paired with a much broader mouth feel and fatter, riper fruits. It’s a big wine and will pair fantastically with your favorite robust (think bbq, lasagna) dinner.
Immediately, in the glass you notice the deep, dark ruby brick red, after a couple moments the magic happens. Ripe strawberry and dried cherry wafting with lightly charred vanilla & notes of caramel. On the palate, the wine opens broad and soft leading into ripe cranberry and hints of sweet spice. It finishes in a rewarding cloud of soft round tannins and lingering vanilla.
