Our second production of Nebbiolo and the first from the Clarksburg appellation. We chose to work with the Heringer family as they farm an eccentric set of varietals in the heart of the California Delta. Cool evenings combined with the long warm days provide a great canvas for their unique varietals.

Nebbiolo is not an easy grape to grow, bouncing between heavy crop loads, very light to no crop and susceptible to mildew the grower has to constantly be on their toes and resilient to the year to year changes. This is evident in the very small amount of acreage planted in California.
Upon harvest, we were totally surprised by the lack of color in the fruit, subtly silver with hints of red-pink. After hand sorting and de-stemming we moved it to macro bins and allowed it a 2 day cold soak before inoculating to begin fermentation. Recognizing the lack of color (but bold tannins) post fermentation we allowed for a short extended maceration to further extract color and tannin. After nearly 2 years in barrel the resulting wine is beautiful!
Deep, complex aromas of plum, red cherry, and spice lead into cigar box, hints of licorice and tobacco finishing in lingering vanilla and firm tannins.
