More info

In mid 2016 our friend, farmer and fellow winemaker Tom Hoffman approached me to see if we had any interest in making Malbec from a fairly young vineyard he had planted in the sandy soils overlooking the Mokelumne river.

Just a couple of weeks out from harvest Tom pulled leaves on the north side of the vines, exposing the fruit to more sun to contribute to increased skin density, color and tannin formation.

Similar to our other vineyards, the cooler 2016 vintage allowed more hang time and we were able to pick at slightly lower brix (for reduced alcohols) while still retaining all of the beautiful, complex aromatics.

Being my first experience with making Malbec, I choose to coax out the delicate aromatics while not over extracting aggressive tannins. To that point we destemmed the fruit without crushing to small macro bins and allowed cold soak for two days. This extended cold pre-fermentation time helps to better set color. Unique to this lot, we chose to saignée (bleed off to tank) about 8% of the juice which we used in our 2016 Rosé. This saignée helps to further concentrate the red wine.

On day 3 we inoculated with yeast and began the 9 day cycle of gently punching down the cap of skins back into the fermenting juice before pressing off and moving into a mix of French and American oak barrels for 22 months.

On the nose soft fruity aromas of plum and boysenberry mingle with subtle toasty notes leading into a broad, silky mouthfeel.
