For this release, we came very close to being able put it together as a 2017 vintage release, but in the end felt that the additional younger wines added so much extra complexity that the final blend warranted a cross vintage blend.
The resulting wine is so complex, pulling from all corners of Italy. Sangiovese brings in loads of bright fruit and medium tannins. The Barbera, robust structure cherry and meaty undertones. Cabernet for classic cherry and bold structure. The Montepulchiano brings deep brooding texture and gorgeous earthy, leather and tobacco supported with the young and barely tamed tannin and acid of Nebbiolo.
Drinking this wine is a treat, with it unfolding like origami yielding layer after layer. It's drinking beautifully right now but will continue to gain complexity over the years.
On the nose, Strawberry and Cherry pie come on strong, leading into subtle aromas of potpurri/dried flowers with lingering layers of tobacco, leather, spice and toasted oak. On the palate, a medium weight wine with rich flavors of red fruits, plum, cherry.
