Our 2016 Zinfandel is a blend of some of our favorite Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel fields averaging over 60 years of age. The 2016 vintage was warm with a nice but accelerated ripening period leading to very robust, extracted wines. To mitigate the exceptionally ripe fruit we decided to blend in 11% Primitivo from Amador County, both boosting acidity and tannin structure. Upon harvest we immediately crushed the grapes to small bins and moved into a chilled environment to cold soak before initiating fermentation. Post alcohol fermentation, we inoculated for malolactic fermentation and moved into small French & American oak barrels for 16 months of aging.
Rich and bold on the nose, layered with ripe black cherry, dried plum and black pepper finishing in soft, sweet spice and lightly toasty vanilla. On the palate, this Zinfandel delivers a heavyweight texture of soft, chewy tannins that linger in a mix of smokey dark chocolate, vanilla and fruit.
