This wine is a special lot. Petite Sirah can be brash and a bit aggressive when it's young but with proper aging those rough edges fall away leaving layers of complex fruit and beautifully structured tannins. In this case there is no reason to tuck the wine away and wait for the perfect moment to open it, we've done the work for you. It's silky, perfect and ready to drink.
The Shield vineyard existed briefly in southwest Lodi. Sitting in deep sandy soils it ripened quickly alongside it's vineyard companion Tempranillo. Unfortunately the owners decided just following the 2016 vintage that the vineyard no longer penciled out and the decision was made to bulldoze it. Consequently the vineyard was replaced with a field of solar panels.
Well, no use crying over bulldozed vineyards. At least we have this spectacular time capsule of wine from 2016, back when there was no second guessing a hug or handshake and you may have even stolen a sip off a friends glass (gasp!). At least now we all have a little more time to savor this special bottle of wine.
44 Months in barrel. What does that do? The tannins and acid become softer and rounder on the palate leading to a velvety mouthfeel. Some of that bright, vivid cherry shifts to a darker preserved fruit character while overall trending into a superbly drinkable wine.
Blackberry, dark cherry and dried blueberries intertwined with complex aromas of peppercorn, black tea, dark chocolate and cigar box from extended oak age. Bold, earthy tannins on the palate, finishing with rich plum and spice.
Get it while you can.
