Just south east of our Lockeford winery is the Borden Ranch sub-AVA of the Lodi Appellation. This area is distinct from the broader Lodi region not only for the rolling hills but also for the varied red clay soils, broken rock and cobblestone. The segment of the Las Lomas vineyard that we picked from sits high on a peak overlooking the surrounding hills and flood plain.
This was our first vintage from the field and we decided to take a restrained approach in winemaking, pushing forward the fruit while keeping the pretty butterscotch & vanillian oak notes. We pressed the fruit to stainless tank cutting off the pressing early to keep the wine lighter on the palate. After chilling and inoculating we moved it to neutral french oak barrel for fermentation. Post fermentation we aged on lees for 8 months
The bouquet opens with inviting notes of butterscotch and vanilla, layered over a base of ripe apricot. Subtle hints of Fuji apple add a refreshing crispness, balancing the richness. On the palate, butterscotch and vanilla continue to come forward, offering a full and rich mouthfeel. Juicy apricot and crisp Fuji apple provide a vibrant contrast, contributing to the wine's complexity. The finish is smooth and lingering, with the sweet spice of oak complementing the fruit notes beautifully.
